You’ve heard the old saying that “Dogs are Man’s Best Friend.”

Your dog’s loyalty to you goes unquestioned.

He’ll be by your side, showing his unconditional support to you.

He knows when you’re having a tough day. And he’ll do everything he can to cheer you up.

Yes, “Dogs are Man’s Best Friend.”

But maybe a better question is “Are you your “dog’s best friend?”

Are you showing the loyalty to your dog that you should?

Are you there for him when he’s hurting?

Do you try to cheer him up?

This post is about developing traits that’ll empower you to become the dog owner you should aspire to be.

What are the characteristics that you and I must have to provide a wonderful home for our Cavapoo canine buddies?

Let’s look at a few!

Patience

Regardless if you work remotely at home or outside the home, you’re tired physically and mentally after a long, grueling day.

You’re exhausted!

All you want to do is relax.

You don’t want to be bothered.

You’re on the brink of being testy or snappy.

You want to shut out the world.

But remember that your fur baby is eager to see you!

He wants to be around you.

He needs your attention.

And that should make you feel good!

So, breathe out a few times and relax.

Then throw a toy ball for him to chase.

Give him a treat showing your appreciation and love for him.

Talk to him and give him a tummy rub.

In other words, be your “dog’s best friend.”

Be patient with your sidekick!

Spend Time with Your Dog

If you are going to be your “dog’s best friend,” it goes without saying that you’re going to have to spend time with him.

Friends love to hang out together.

Friends are there for each other.

And if you’re your dog’s best friend take time to do things with him!

Teach him to sit on command.

Train him to roll over.

Let him sit on your lap. Remember the adjective “lap dog?”

Now, realize that you don’t have to clock a half day playing with your pup.

Spending quality time a few minutes each day will form an awesome connection with Fido.

It comes down to this: your dog must know that you care enough about him to spend time with him.

dog toys

Buy Him Toys

Everyone (including dogs) love gifts!

Personally speaking, our Cavapoo has a box full of toys.

And when he gets a new one, he gets so excited!

He goes berserk, running around with it between his teeth!

He feels loved and appreciated.

Dog toys are those extra items you buy for your fur baby.

They’re different than the essential purchases like dog food and pee pads.

And believe me, your dog can distinguish between a pee pad and a toy!

But here’s an important point.

A dog toy can serve as a powerful tool of interaction between a dog owner and his pet.

Be prepared to be an automatic toy throwing machine for a few minutes!

So, get those dusty bills out of your wallet or purse and go on a buying spree for your fur baby.

After all, you’re his best friend!

little things matter

Do Little Things for Him

There are some things that you’ll have to do for your pup. Things that a dog can’t do for himself.

Things like filling up his water bowl.

And grooming him yourself or taking him to a professional groomer.

You’ll have to brush his teeth.

And don’t forget to cut his nails!

And of course, your puppy will depend on you to drive him to the vet to get his shots!

Neglecting or refusing to do these “little things” will hurt your pup physically and will in time hurt you monetarily.

Let me explain.

If you fail to cut your dog’s nails this will cause them to eventually curl back into his paw pad. And that’ll be painful for your pet and your pocketbook!

Take Him on a Walk

I know that this should fall under the category of “Spending Time with Him.” But I want to emphasize this point.

So, I’m giving it special treatment, just like you should give your pup special treatment.

If your canine family member is alone for several hours a day due to your work schedule, wouldn’t it be nice to take him on a walk when you get home?

Let him get some fresh air.

Give him the opportunity to see the outside world.

Allow him to stretch those muscles.

A Cavapoo is an active dog. He needs time to get any built-up energy out of his system so that it won’t result in negative or destructive behavior.

When you give him time to walk (or to do his zoomies), you’re helping him to relieve any anxiety or pent-up energy in his little body.

But here’s a little advice.

Make sure you put a harness on him.

Why should you use a harness instead of a collar?

The reason you should use a harness instead of a collar is that a Cavapoo’s neck is not as strong as other canine’s necks.

And if you use a collar, you run the risk of hurting your dog’s neck if you accidentally jerk his leash in one direction.

However, a harness can equally distribute the weight of your pup preventing any possible injuries.

Be your pup’s best friend by walking him!
